What is the Padamo Quick Booster

The Padamo Quick Booster is a BBQ accessory that works in conjunction with your Chimney Starter and helps light your briquettes and charcoal quickly. It works by blowing air up the chimney starter which accelerates the time it will take to get you cooking.

I first came across this type of product as Australian Heat Beads do a version of it. Unfortunately, it is not currently available in the UK. Doing some google searches bought up this product.

Why Do You Need One

I tend to cook with briquettes. My favourite brand is the Australian Heat Beads. These give a consistent temperature to cook on and will last you at least 3 hours. However, they can take 30-35 minutes to heat up using a chimney starter. This is not a huge time considering the cook length they will give, but midweek when you may want to get cooking quickly, it may put you off lighting the BBQ.

In my experience so far with the Padamo Quick Booster it halves the light time. The Heat Beads light in around 18 minutes and that is with a 3/4 full starter. I have not tried it with lumpwood charcoal yet but I am sure it would have the same effect.

How does the Padamo Quick Booster Stack Up

On unpacking the Padamo the thing that struck me was that it is really sturdy and quality product. It’s made by a Danish company although not sure exactly where it is manufactured.

The product can run on either battery or mains power. The product does not come with the mains adapter and that is an additional cost but would be a good longer term investment. It takes 4 AA batteries that have lasted 5 cooks (all briquettes) so that equates to around 1.5 to 2 hours use.

The product works by placing a metal plate on the top of the device. You then place your firelighters or alternative starters on the metal plate and light them. Next place your (already filled) chimney starter over the metal plate to it rests on the top of the Padamo Quick Booster.

Finally, turn the device on and let the product do its thing.

Verdict

I am really pleased with the Padamo Quick Booster. I think the build quality is excellent and it has been left out in the elements with no detrimental impact so far. It definitely works and does what it is designed for. If you are quite often in a rush to light the BBQ this product will really help.

The downside for me is the speed it will got through batteries, as this will prove expensive. I definitely think if this is a product I continue to use regularly I will invest in the mains power unit.

Overall, I think it is a good product, but very much a luxury accessory rather than a necessity.

It won’t improve your cooks but it will certainly get you cooking quicker.
